Ellis Surname DNA Project
Results Page
The purpose of the Ellis Surname DNA project is to identify the many Ellis lines around the world, and to help the participants connect with cousins. There are many variations in the name: Alce, Ales, Alis, Allace, Alles, Alless, Allis, Alliss, Eles, Elice, Elis, Elles, Ellice, Ellis, Els, Elys . . . all are welcome to join. All participants of the National Geographic Genographic DNA Project who are descended on a direct paternal Ellis line are welcome to join.
Now available - a mailing list for our project has been set up at Rootsweb. I will be using this list to send updates, and interesting developments. I am hoping that members will use the mailing list to discuss their lines and look for common ancestors. I am hoping it will be a tool to encourage new membership with non members. This is your mailing list, have fun with it. To subscribe click here.
I had the sad task of removing a participant from a group today. At the 12 and 25 marker resolution it appeared that they belonged in R1b Group 8. When the results came back for markers 26-37 there were just to many mismatches. This is the second time this has happened since I took over as Admin.
It made me realize that in this surname project, the minimum number of markers required is 37. I will be encouraging all new participants to order the 37 marker test, and all existing participants to upgrade to at least 37 markers.
On a brighter note, I have set up a feature where participants are able to upload their own family pedigrees from a gedcom file.
Results Summary
The results include 4 unique Haplogroups, indicating at least four unique Ellis families in our project.
We are always
interested in in any feedback that anyone may have regarding the format. Please let us know if this
works or if you have an idea on how to improve it by contacting Dawn Ellis
. And again, if you are able, please consider donating to the fund.

Legend:
In the table, there are a number of features. First, click on any of the
underlined ancestor or group names to access their pedigree information. Clicking on the underlined kit number
will allow you to email the owner of that kit! If there is a "Y" in the column entitled "Web",
it means that this participant has a website and you can access it by clicking on the "Y". The DYS numbers in
red are considered fast mutating markers. Finally, Haplogroups that have been confirmed by SNP testing are in
bold green text.
Matched Group Results:
This first page of
information details the results for all of the projects matched groups. All of these groups have been
identified by carefully analysis of all available data including, number of markers tested, number of
mismatches, which markers were mismatched and existing genealogies. Except in rare occasions, once a
matched group is identified, they are assigned a permanent group number and are referred to in the
future by that number.
Group 1 is a group of individuals all descended from John Ellis (1607 England) and Elizabeth Murrell. For more detailed analysis and a chart tying all the lines (but one) together, go here.
Group 4 (I) has two members who are descended from John Ellis (c 1810 USA/SC). Both participants in this group have close matches with the surname Harris.
I feel a special fondness for Haplogroup J2. It is our smallest, with only three members, but it is the group my family fits into. Two of us are descended from Robert Ellis (1797 Devon or London England), and the other is descended from a cousin of Robert's who also settled on PEI.
