Most of the genealogy programs we use today have the ability to export your family data to the universal GEDCOM file format. This module makes it easy to upload your own file to the website so that other researchers can see which families are represented in the project. Here is how!
- Follow your softwares instructions and create a GEDCOM file of your data. Make sure you remember where you put this file.
- After you have logged in, you should see a link on the left-side menu called "Upload GEDCOM". Click this link. It will take you to a screen called "Data Import".
- Click on the "Browse" button to file and select the GEDCOM file that you've created and saved on your PC.
- Under "Destination Tree", use the drop-down to find and click on your tree. The trees are listed by Kit number, earliest known ancestor, location and timeframe. If your kit is not listed, please contact me and I will get one setup for you.
- Leave the rest of the option intact and click on the "Import Data" button.
Depending on how large your file is, this process may take a minute or two to complete, during which time you won't see any obvious activity on the webpage. Be patient...it is working on it. Once complete, you will be redirected to statistics-type page that will tell you how many people, families, source and notes were imported. Click on the "Return to Homepage" link and you are finished!! To see your import, click on the Surnames link and select your tree from the dropdown menu. Then, you should be able to navigate around your data! If not, contact me and I will help out!
